world in miniature / mundo miniatura

For Leonardo da Vinci the human body was similar to a world in miniature (sea of blood, bones which are the support to the flesh as well as the world has rocks which are the support of the earth). This anatomical worldview had its origins in Antiquity and continued until the modern era. This metaphor of the world in miniature (or, a world inside of a world inside of a world) was also expressed in etchings by Johannes Buno in the 17th century and by Arthur Merton in the 19th century. Merton, influenced mostly by the symbolistic and phrenological trends in vogue at the time, put forward the head (or, mind) as a world in miniature in his diagrams; a kind of internal diorama which represents the external world.

In the 20th century, Fritz Kahn, compared human bodily functions with a factory flow chart (the former world in miniature as a factory in miniature) in his famous Man as Industrial Palace (Der Mensch als Industriepalast). His analogy “modernized” the anatomical idea of that world in miniature.

In 2010, Henning M. Lederer, made an animation inspired by Kahn’s metaphorical poster.

Esta cosmovisión anatómica se originó en la antigüedad y continuó hasta la etapa moderna. Johannes Buno en el siglo XVII y Arthur Merton en el XIX, plasmaron en sus grabados esta metáfora del mundo en miniatura (o un mundo dentro de un mundo dentro de un mundo); Merton, influenciado mayormente por las tendencias simbolistas y frenológicas en boga, propone la cabeza (mente) en sus diagramas como un mundo en miniatura; una suerte de diorama interno que representa al mundo exterior.

En el siglo XX, Fritz Kahn compara las funciones del cuerpo humano con el organigrama de una fábrica (el otrora mundo en miniatura como una fábrica en miniatura) en su famoso: El hombre como palacio industrial (Der Mensch als Industriepalast); su analogía “modernizó” la visión anatómica de ese mundo en miniatura.

En 2010, Henning M. Lederer realizó una animación sobre el metafórico cartel de Kahn.
